Flats and sharps are the black keys. Sharps are a half note higher. So, on the keyboard we move to the very next note. Sharps are denoted by "#".




So, there are 5 sharps in one octave. An octave is a pair of 12 keys. That is from C to B , they include both the white and black keys.

The black notes are called by sharps as well as flats. Flats are a half note lower. So, on the keyboard the flats are a half note lower. Flats are denoted by "".
